In 'Letters,' Clint Eastwood battles for the hard truth of both sides

Eastwood had just $20 million and five weeks of shooting to piggyback a second
demanding war movie. It is typical of him, no praise hog, to pass much of it to his
barely known writer:

“I told her to go home and write. It came back really good. We fiddled with it, not
much. She finished it before we did 'Flags,' so I walked it over to Washington, D.C.,
got the Japanese onboard, then to Iceland, where we did our beach invasion sequence.

“On Sundays or whenever, doing 'Flags,' if I wanted to get my brain off that one,
I would look at her script. Then, we'd shoot some stuff for it and just mark it
'other picture.' Kinda sneaky!”

“None of them knew much about the war,” says Eastwood, “not even Watanabe.
The Japanese ignored their history after the war. So it was a huge learning thing for
all of us. Ken was a big help tracking down his side of it, and we had some older
gentlemen who remembered the dialects and details. I met with Iwo veterans, and
also Baron Nishi's son and Kuribayashi's grandson, and the film is really a tribute.”
